Order in the Church

Submitted by FatherAthanasios on Mon, 02/28/2022 - 08:05

This time of year, you can real feel the order in the Church. Since the beginning of the Triodion, you may have noticed the Church has not stopped to prepare us for the Great Fast. This is being accomplished not only in regard to fasting, since the fast from meat begins today, but with the spiritual themes and even the Lectionary.

Brother against Brother

Submitted by FatherAthanasios on Fri, 02/25/2022 - 08:09

The past few days have seen a new war erupt in the world. The eyes of the world are fixed on Russia and Ukraine, as pictures and videos of people fleeing and bombs exploding are broadcast live throughout the world. Letters from political and religious leaders urging peace and an immediate end to the conflict seem to be falling on deaf ears. What could I possibly add the conversation?

So Many Witnesses

When we are young school children, we get excited on ‘Career Day’ when we get to meet the different examples of doctors, lawyers, teachers, first responders, etc. We get inspired that one day we too will have such honorable careers, and from that early age we begin to plan our future. College choices and even which extra-curricular activities we participate in during High School all have one purpose, to help us become what inspired us so many years earlier.

Don’t Lose Hope

In today’s world it is quite easy to lose hope. Watching the news or scrolling through your social media timeline, and it seems we are surrounded by destruction and hatred. Around every corner we find so many examples of evil in the world and so few examples of love, we begin to wonder if it is even possible to love today.

Urgency for Salvation

Lately you turn on the news station and you are bombarded with warnings and images of what some believe to be the imminent invasion of Ukraine by Russia. I don’t know whether it is imminent or not, but I do know there is a sense of urgency in the air about to handle the aggression. This blog is not about Ukraine to be clear. It about having a sense of urgency for our salvation.

A Trap has been Set

Submitted by FatherAthanasios on Fri, 02/18/2022 - 07:52

Around every corner a trap has been set for us by the evil one. It isn’t always big and scary, but it is deadly. It is the trap of our ego, and we are the ones who bait it every day. As soon as we awake in the morning, we begin to think about how we can get ahead, or how we can be honored by others. We are in a constant state of falling trap to our ego, and anger toward our brothers and sisters is the easiest bait.

Wait Until Your Father Comes Home!

These words were enough to tame any child and meant that it was already too late to be saved by our mother. She had done everything she could, but we didn’t listen. Our room was still a mess, and our homework was not finished, and we hadn’t even begun to do our chores yet. There we sat, tormented by every sound in the driveway, thinking the end was near. Then our father came home.

When we Repent

Living the Church calendar can be a struggle, to be sure, between having to keep track of the fasting days and feasting days, the services schedules, which readings are assigned to which days. As difficult as it can be, it is that much more difficult to navigate if you do not have a guide. Orthodox cannot be done in isolation.

The Church Needs YOU!

The more popular our ministry becomes, the more we receive comments from non Orthodox Christians accusing of us not being a real church, even calling us pagan slanders. Orthodox Christians in the west are accustomed to such accusations, but not without before reminding our western brethren of our loyalty to the teachings of the Holy Apostles.
