Out with the Old…In with the New!

Submitted by FatherAthanasios on Fri, 12/31/2021 - 08:08

Today is the last day of 2021, and everyone will be making New Year Resolutions. As clocks hit midnight across the globe tonight, good intentioned men and women will rush to confirm New Year resolutions. Of course, many if not most if not all New Year resolutions end up in the garbage pail by the end of the first week of the New Year, but that won’t stop millions across the globe from faithfully committing to improving their lives this year. In many cases, people make the same resolutions every year. Some common resolutions are:

Something we can Trust

We all know the past two years have been difficult to navigate the waters of COVID19. The trouble has been both political and spiritual, as many have turned a virus into a war. I have written about this several times in the past two years, but this morning I have a different comment. The question isn’t whether the virus is real or imagined, as there are thousands who have died. The question is, to whom will we listen to for advice on how to navigate the virus waters?

Save the Innocents

For a second time in just a few days, the Church commemorates the slaughter of thousands of innocent children at the hands of Herod the King. These first martyrs, having offered their lives without ever even meeting Christ, should be honored by all Christians not only with a reference on the calendar but a permanent place in our hearts.

Episode 356 - The War Against God

From the very moment Christ was born, the world declared war against God. Thousands of innocent children were slaughtered by King Herod because of his jealousy. God protected the Newborn Christ by sending Him with His Mother to Egypt. The war is still raging against God, and our children are still being killed. Either by drug abuse or temptation to stop believing what the Church teaches about God, the world continues to drag our children away from God and His Church. What are we doing to protect our children from this war? We must stop ignoring the war, and fight to protect our children.

Giving Our All

When it comes to Christmas, we often hear that it is the thought that matters. We are taught that it isn’t about how much we spend on a gift that makes it valuable. It can be difficult to navigate the stormy waters of gift giving and buying for Christmas, especially in the light of today’s Gospel.

For the Children!

Last minute shopping for stocking stuffers. Baking their favorite cookies. Snuggling in front of their favorite Christmas movie. These are the signs that Christmas is just about here, and we find ourselves doing just about anything for the children.

Ultimately, we know that Christmas is much more than just cookies and presents under the tree. It is about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. In today’s Gospel reading he reminds us to be like children in our faith for the kingdom of God.

The Home Stretch to Christmas

Beginning yesterday, the Sunday before Christmas, the Church began to celebrate the Feast of the Coming in the Flesh of God. I almost don’t want to use the word Christmas since the word has become so commercialized. It might sound trivial, but if you’ve been a follower of my blog for any length of time, I believe in the small details when it comes to living the Orthodox Christian Life. But….Christmas is coming!
